The Blue Lagoon geothermal spa is one of the most visited attractions in Iceland, and easily the most photographed. The spa is located in a lava field in Grindavík on the Reykjanes Peninsula, southwestern Iceland, approximately 13km from the Keflavik International Airport. Though the lagoon looks like something born from Iceland's otherworldly landscape, it is actually man made. The lagoon was created by run-off from the nearby Svartsengi power plant, which pumps up the geothermally heated water from a full mile below the surface. After being used to run turbines that generate electricity, the excess water is fed into the lagoon. The water is renewed every 2 days. The warm waters are rich in minerals like silica and sulfur and bathing in the Blue Lagoon is reputed to help many people suffering from skin diseases such as psoriasis. The water temperature in the bathing and swimming area of the lagoon averages 40 °C (104 °F) and is enjoyable year round, even in freezing conditions. In addition to the lagoon, there's a sauna, steam bath carved out of a lava cave and a massaging waterfall.

The woman's changing / shower area is big. Lots of lockers. Several vanity areas with nice lighted mirrors and hair dryers. It's a paradise! Crew is extremely friendly and if you come at nights (less people around) in winter you might have the chance to spot the famous Northern Lights right from the lagoon. Amazing. Many ppl bring hotel towels which all look the same and get mixed up and nicked. You don't need to bring it out to the Lagoon, but if you do, hang it in the Blue Café. Oh, and sunglasses are a must. We went directly after landing at KEF. Super easy to transport us and our luggage from KEF, to the Lagoon, and then on to the city. Perfect recipe for relaxation. Amazing setting, nice hot water is very relaxing, super high quality food in the lava restaurant. Fun silica mud masks to make your skin feel tight and soft. Most popular tourist destination in Iceland. This place is bougie, clean facilities, free amenities including shampoo, conditioner, qtips, cotton balls and bags to put your wet suit in.

The lagoon is covered in a perpetual mist of white fog resulting from the rising steam from the hot water meeting the brisk cold air. The surrounding lava rocks are covered in a white blanket of snow and because the sun is never so high in the heavens there is a periwinkle blue haze resting in the sky. This place feels somehow other worldly. I'll take some of that (courtesy of Tunder Mouse) The bone chilling air from the showers to the waters entrance is almost enough to make you run back to the comfort of the showers, but once your first toe enters the water your entire body will melt into submission. There is a small indoor portion of the pool before you step fully outside, and from this small pool you can swim into the full length of the lagoon.

Blue Lagoon Birthday My birthday falls two days before Christmas. It is on December 23, the eve of Christmas Eve. My mom left the hospital immediately after I was born to come home to take care of her five other kids and create the magical Christmas they expected to have. Growing up, Christmas was always a very enchanting time in our household. My mother wrapped the most beautiful presents with giant flowing bows, we always had a roaring fire, and my dad couldn't let any Christmas pass without playing on practical joke on us unsuspecting and unwilling participants. We have tried to recreate this feeling in our home during our Christmas celebrations. The entire month of December is devoted to making candy, decorating, and dreaming up ways to give love to the people that are special to us. I love that my birthday is so close to Christmas, and I love that it is wrapped up in the magic of the Christmas season! The Magic of Christmas When we traveled to Iceland for Christmas, we arrived on the morning of my birthday, and we immediately celebrated by soaking in the Blue Lagoon.

The Blue Lagoon geothermal spa is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Iceland. It is also known for its healing effects. Image source The steaming lagoon is located in a lava field in Grindavík, on the south-west- coast of Iceland. This giant bathtub is actually man-made. It is created as an over spill pool for the nearby Svartsengi geothermal power station. The lagoon is filled with six million liters of seawater from 6, 561 ft (2, 000 m) beneath the earth's surface. The temperature is between 99 °F and 102 °F (37-39 °C), making it nice and warm bathing experience. There's a lot more to enjoy in the Blue Lagoon geothermal spa. Saunas, massaging waterfall or a bath carved out of a natural lava cave will definitely make your stay unforgettable. The steamy waters are rich in many healthy minerals, like white silica mud. For its healing effects, the spa is especially recommended for those with skin problems. But, there's one thing you should know. Due to the high sulphur content, the waters are a bit smelly.

The water in the Blue Lagoon is a mix of freshwater and seawater that come together below the surface of the earth in this region. Through a complicated drilling process at Svartsengi, a geothermal power plant, it is mobilized to provide hot water and electricity to the town's inhabitants while filling up the lagoon for soaking leisure. The water replenishes itself in the lagoon every 40 minutes. Blue Lagoon wonder water (courtesy of contiki) A few things to note before you come: Children are welcome though must remain in the small entry pool or wear floaties The water is safe for your body and hair, but not for your jewelry Pre-reserved tickets are now required for entry All swimmers must take a full shower before donning their swimsuit and entering the pool Towels cost extra ► For Kids: The Blue Lagoon is one of National Geographic's 25 Wonders of the World and is considered among the world's most remarkable places.
