In state wrestling final, Ballston Spa’s Barnes drops stunner | The Daily Gazette

Sunday, October 19, 2014 by Aidan Joly Photos by Eli Fisher A Blue Streaks run leaves behind a trail of Scotties during Saturday's game. Saratoga's running game helped them post a shutout victory over Ballston Spa. An improved defense and a very strong running game was more than enough for the Saratoga junior varsity football team to get past Ballston Spa. The Saratoga Blue Streaks defeated the Ballston Spa Scotties Saturday morning at Saratoga Springs High School by a score of 32-0, the Saratoga team's first shutout victory of the season. The game followed a 42-35 loss by the varsity Blue Streaks, also against Ballston Spa. It was a 30 yard run from Blue Streak runner Darius Wicks into the end zone that put the first points on the board, making it 6-0 Saratoga only a few short minutes in. That would be the only scoring in the first quarter. "The running backs ran hard…and we broke some tackles and made some big plays, " Head Coach Anthony Spackmann said after the win. It would be the second quarter where the Blue Streaks put up most of their points.

Coach of the Year Harvey Staulters, Ballston Spa: Won school's first Class A title and produced a state champion (Tyler Barnes), while also ruling the Suburban Council.

He's an upper weight to watch in the Empire State this season. After being named a first team all-area linebacker last year for Ballston Spa, several D-1 AA programs, including Sacred Heart, SUNY Albany and Stony Brook began recruiting him. So, why did he decide to pursue wrestling at the next level? "I chose to wrestle in college because I love the process of wrestling, the team aspect and individual aspect, " Cook said. "It's a sport that I really enjoy putting work towards and you really control how good you are. It's all on you. " Cook visited NC State for a weekend back in September and also went to George Mason to look at the wrestling program. While he had a choice between two sports and several schools, in the end, Cook said his decision was clear. "Watching my brother [Billy], who wrestled at NC State, and watching all of his success, it was an easy choice, " Cook said. "Especially after building a relationship with [NC State head coach] Pat Popolizio and meeting some of the guys on the team, I just knew I fit in very well there and I'm excited to get to work. "

285 — Jake Warren, Sr., Burnt Hills: Battled a season-long sprained ankle (from a football game, actually) and recovered from various illnesses to finish fourth at states (31-4).
